In the Footsteps of James Baillie Fraser

In 1820 Views in the Himala Mountains, a set of twenty aquatint prints after watercolours by James Baillie Fraser were published. Fraser was probably the first European to reach the sources of the Ganges (Ganga) and Jumna (Yamuna). These prints, up close and personal with the mountainous landscape, brought audiences in cities in India and Britain closer to the Himalayas than they had ever been before. The aim of In the Footsteps of James Baillie Fraser was to locate the points in the landscape Fraser sketched from, and to recreate a contemporary version of the Journal of a Tour he published about his journey. The project was conducted in collaboration with independent researchers in Himachal Pradesh.
