Nancy Jane Burton: Watercolours from a journey through Pakistan and Afghanistan in the 1930s
Nancy Jane Burton sailed to India in 1932. Initially intending to stay for six months, she remained for four years and travelled extensively through northern India (now part of Pakistan), Afghanistan and Kashmir. This exhibition charts Nancy’s journey through her vibrant watercolours of people, landscapes, street and household scenes. It also uses other paintings and objects from the region to place Nancy’s art in context. This exhibition is part of a wider effort to raise the profile of female artists painting in India since the 18th century.
