Classical Burmese Dance

Classical Burmese Dance

This Burmese classical dance costume consists of the htamein (long skirt), yin-khan (bodice) and htain mathein ein-gyi (jacket). The wave pattern design is a common motif known as acheik and represents the waves of the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) River.  Burmese classical dance is all about graceful, elegant movement that conveys the legends and stories of Burma through performance. The dancers may imitate the movement and appearance of birds, flowers, nats (deities in folk religion) or marionettes, sometimes even dancing simultaneously alongside the puppets mimicking their movements.

This costume belonged to Daw Mya Mya Millicent Spencer, a classically trained Burmese dancer, and was kindly donated to The South Asia Collection by her daughters in 2018.
