Woodcarving is one of Indonesia’s most widespread crafts, but styles of woodcarving are varied. As an archipelago of around 17,500 islands and home to more than 300 ethnic groups, embracing Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and local tribal religions, Indonesia celebrates its diversity. This is also reflected in its art and crafts. This display looks at the different influences evident in Indonesian woodcarving and explores some of the styles, traditions and uses of wood in Indonesia.
