Tree of Life: The Art of Wood Carving in Swat

This image shows the case in full, it is well lit and has a lot of different types of hand carved wooden objects amongst interpretation on the walls.

The Swat Valley is a mountainous district of northern Pakistan that has ideal growing conditions for the Himalayan Cedar tree, which provides the region with a sustainable source of wood. More commonly known as deodar cedar, the wood is used extensively in the Swat Valley for architecture, domestic and agricultural use. On display in this case are some examples of wooden items from Swat. Look closely for the intricately carved motifs that adorn everything from stately mosque columns to everyday utensils.
